Modest Mussorgsky & Zoltán Kodály

Filmed for Sligo International Chamber Music Festival 2021.

Originally composed for solo piano, the suite has been orchestrated and arranged for many diverse ensembles over the years and now for an unlikely combination of violin, saxophone, double bass and accordion! Accordionist Dermot Dunne has arranged this much-loved concert piece for the Sligo International Chamber Music Festival in such a way as to fully exploit the expressive quality of each instrument. Mussorgsky composed 'Pictures' in 1874 to commemorate the artwork of his close friend Viktor Hartmann who had died suddenly in the previous year. For this performance, we are going to celebrate the art of internationally renowned contemporary Sligo artist Séan McSweeney and will present one of his abstract paintings alongside each of the movements of the suite, which we hope will complement the mood and texture of Mussorgsky's music.
