Having regard to the issues presented by the current Covid-19 emergency, Sligo County Council has taken the difficult decision to cancel Sligo International Chamber Music Festival due to take place from 1st to 4th May 2020. This decision is necessary in light of travel restrictions around the world and venue closures in Ireland with no confirmed dates as to when they will be lifted.

'Beethoven as hero, Beethoven as sell-out, Beethoven as prophet'

Three different images of the great composer

Adrian Smith (Lecturer, TU Dublin Conservatoire of Music and Drama)

Few other figures fulfil the image of the Romantic artist better than Beethoven, a composer whose name is synonymous with notions of uncompromising artistic integrity. His 'middle period' contains some of the most inspiring passages of music ever written while his 'late' work is lauded for its almost transcendent quality. In between the 'middle' and 'late' periods however, there are some works that Beethoven clearly dashed off in order to make a quick buck, proving that even he was not immune to occasionally selling-out. This talk will present three different snapshots of Beethoven's music which fit the following images: Beethoven as hero, Beethoven as sell-out, and Beethoven as prophet.

Originally composed for solo piano, the suite has been orchestrated and arranged for many diverse ensembles over the years and now for an unlikely combination of violin, clarinet, double bass and accordion! Accordionist Dermot Dunne (who has played the piece in his own version for solo accordion) has arranged this much-loved concert piece for the Sligo International Chamber Music Festival in such a way as to fully exploit the expressive quality and potential of each instrument of the quartet to evoke the nuances of each of the charming pictures in the suite.
